Our history and initiatives

Following the 2020 catastrophic bushfires, the team recognised the urgent need for proactive measures to protect and preserve koalas in Victoria, particularly in the Ballarat region. This led to a pivotal collaboration with Federation University to establish a ground-breaking koala monitoring project. The team's vision was clear: to ensure the long-term survival of koalas through comprehensive research and monitoring efforts in addition to specialised veterinary care.

Formal incorporation and accreditation

Under the banner of Ballarat Wildlife Hospital, the team implemented specialised referral treatment protocols for a variety of native species. From koalas and echidnas to wedge-tailed eagles and native reptiles, every patient receives tailored care aimed at maximising their chances of survival.

November 2023 marked a significant milestone with the formal incorporation of Ballarat Wildlife Hospital. This milestone not only provided the hospital with essential infrastructure, such as charity status, and also paved the way for seeking Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status, enhancing its ability to secure funding and support for its vital work.

In partnership with local shelters such as Shanhaven Shelter and Jen Greenhalgh Shelter, the team initiated a research project for post-release monitoring. Federation University play a pivotal role in this endeavour, working hand in hand with the shelters to track the progress and well-being of rehabilitated wildlife.
